Being A Role Model

The question of "how would I do?" has been in my mind for a long time.  I have been raised by parents who neither exercised nor knew the importance of exercising and a healthy life style.  It is safe to say that no one in my family knew a dime about exercising.  Not surprisingly, I grew up to be an overweight kid, leading to a heavy set teenager and resulted as an obese adult. As I mentioned, since my parents were not familiar with concept of exercising, they did not guide me to have the habit of exercising.  Today, I can confidently say that I know the importance of exercising and eating healthy. I also know how hard it actually is to lose weight by experience as I lost over 60 pounds by a rigorous diet and exercising process.  Looking back to my childhood and my parents' habits, now I am thinking "how will I do?"

I will definitely encourage my kid(s) to do a team sport to learn what it means to be part of a team and also an individual sport to get familiar with being accountable for their decisions and actions.  I will definitely encourage them to continue a sport of their choice for as long as they are capable.   I am also planning to have small pow wows with them every so often about the importance of eating healthy and balanced. If I can, I want do sports with them just to be a role model, and just to practice what I am preaching for.

What would you do differently for your kids, then your parents did for you in terms of eating healthy and exercising?
